Flow and Behold, Cambridge

Project Background

Sometimes, the power of a home matches the energy of its environment. This masterpiece, perched above the mighty Waikato River is a prime example. Combining an industrial aesthetic with the warmth of natural materials, it features metal accents, concrete panels, and vertical timber.

NZWindows proudly collaborated with Grayling Builders and South Architects to bring this architectural gem to life. Unsurprisingly, Flow and Behold made the Top 100 nationally at the 2024 Master Builders House of the Year Awards. This home was also awarded the regional Supreme House of the Year Award, plus numerous others, including Regional Kitchen Excellence, Regional Gold, and the Resene New Home $2 million – $4 Million award.

Design and Execution

Every aspect of the design optimises the river views, native bush, and picturesque golf course, inviting occupants and visitors alike, to immerse themselves in the ever-changing vista while cocooned within contemporary luxury.

Borrowed Light Windows

In the heart of the home, the living, dining, and den spaces converge on a raised platform, offering a panoramic river view. A dramatic ceiling design directs attention towards the natural beauty of the river beyond, enhancing the immersive experience. To harness natural light, the home’s open-plan lounge, kitchen, and dining area feature strategically placed borrowed light windows. These windows not only brighten the space but also create a serene atmosphere and enhance ventilation. This seamless integration of style and functionality in the joinery fosters an expansive and inviting environment, ideal for cooking, dining, entertaining, or relaxing.

The homeowners selected Clear Solux glass for its ability to enhance natural light and maintain unobstructed views. This sleek, minimalist choice reduces reliance on artificial lighting while elevating the overall aesthetic. For areas requiring privacy, etch light glass was used.

Sliding Doors

The sliding doors, with their large glass panels, frame breathtaking views of the garden and the Waikato River, forging a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. A standout feature is the over-wall slider in the dining room, which glides effortlessly over the cedar panelling. This innovative design offers access to the outdoors while retaining valuable interior wall space, merging practicality with elegance.

Double-Hung Window

The scullery was designed with functionality and entertainment in mind. A double-hung window above the stainless-steel bench provides a pass-through to the outdoor BBQ area. The bench aligns with the BBQ, creating an effortless flow for serving during gatherings.

Plasma Entry Door

Every return home feels special with the Plasma Entry door, which adds a bold, modern touch. Crafted from durable, high-quality materials, the Plasma door withstands harsh weather conditions while maintaining its sleek appearance over time. Its design not only complements the industrial aesthetic but also sets the tone for the home’s contemporary style.

Outcome

This project highlights NZWindows’ dedication to quality craftsmanship, innovative design, and practical solutions. We have proudly contributed to creating a home that truly connects with its environment while meeting the lifestyle needs of its owners. Flow and Behold is a testament to the seamless integration of architectural uniqueness and natural surroundings, offering unforgettable moments of connection with the scenic backdrop.
